European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) and Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS)

Since 2015, the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) and the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) constitute a component of the Copernicus Emergency Management Services (EMS).

EFFIS monitors forest fire activity in near-real time and archives historical information on forests fires in Europe, Middle East and North Africa. Its development, since 1998, follows a series of EU Regulations on the collection and harmonization of forest fire information in Europe in support of fire management services in the countries, European Commission Services and the European Parliament.

The extension of EFFIS to a global level, i.e. the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) is an initiative within the Copernicus EMS and the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) work programs. GWIS aims at monitoring wildfire occurrence and impact at the global level and defining and analysing wildfire regimes at national, regional and global levels.
